What to Expect at Your First Therapy Session
Before the Session
Most therapists ask new clients to complete intake paperwork covering personal history, current concerns, and relevant background. This information helps the therapist understand context before you meet in person or online.
What Happens During Intake
The first session typically focuses on gathering information rather than diving into deep therapeutic work. Expect questions about what brought you to therapy, your history, current stressors, and what you hope to get out of treatment.
Confidentiality and Its Limits
Therapists will usually explain confidentiality early on, including the legal exceptions that apply, such as risk of harm to yourself or others, or suspected abuse of a child or vulnerable adult.
Setting Goals for Future Sessions
By the end of the first session, many therapists will begin outlining a general plan or focus for treatment, though this often continues to evolve as the therapeutic relationship develops.
