What to Expect at Your First Psychiatry Appointment

Purpose of the Initial Evaluation

The first psychiatric appointment is primarily diagnostic. The psychiatrist gathers a detailed history of your symptoms, past treatment, medical conditions, and family mental health history to form an accurate clinical picture.

What You'll Be Asked

Expect questions about symptom onset and duration, sleep, appetite, mood, energy, concentration, substance use, and any current medications or supplements you take.

Possible Outcomes

Depending on the evaluation, the psychiatrist may recommend medication, refer you for therapy, suggest further testing, or a combination of these approaches. Not every visit results in a prescription.

Follow-Up Care

If medication is started, follow-up appointments are used to monitor effectiveness and side effects, and to adjust dosage or switch treatments as needed.
