Stress vs Anxiety: What’s the Difference?

Defining Stress

Stress is typically a response to an external pressure or demand, such as a work deadline or a major life event, and tends to ease once the triggering situation resolves.

Defining Anxiety

Anxiety involves persistent worry or fear that can occur even without a clear external trigger, and it may continue or worsen over time rather than resolving once a specific stressor passes.

Key Differences

Stress is usually proportional to an identifiable cause and time-limited, while clinical anxiety often involves excessive worry that is difficult to control and interferes with daily functioning.

When Either Warrants Professional Support

If stress or worry becomes chronic, disproportionate, or starts affecting sleep, relationships, or work, it may be worth discussing with a mental health professional, regardless of which label fits best.
