How to Know Whether Therapy Is Helping
Signs of Meaningful Progress
Progress can look like reduced symptom intensity, better coping in difficult situations, improved relationships, or simply feeling more understood and less alone with your struggles.
Progress That Isn't Always Linear
It's common for therapy to feel harder before it feels easier, particularly when working through difficult material. Occasional setbacks do not necessarily mean therapy isn't working.
Talking to Your Therapist About Progress
Openly discussing what feels helpful and what doesn't is a normal part of therapy. Most therapists welcome this feedback and can adjust their approach accordingly.
When to Reassess the Plan
If you consistently feel no movement after a reasonable period, or the relationship doesn't feel supportive, it may be worth discussing a change in approach or considering a different therapist.
