New research has found that early-life stress can physically alter how DNA is packaged inside brain cells, leaving stress-related genes primed to activate more easily years later. In animal experiments, researchers were able to block this effect, preventing the heightened anxiety that would otherwise result.

What the Study Found

Researchers studying the biological effects of early-life stress found changes in chromatin, the structure that packages DNA inside cells, specifically in regions of the genome linked to stress response. These changes appeared to make stress-related genes more easily activated later in life, a mechanism that may help explain why early adversity is associated with heightened stress sensitivity long after the original stressful period has ended. In mice, researchers were able to intervene and block this chromatin change, which prevented the increased anxiety-like behavior that early-life stress would otherwise produce.
